“I've crashed two of these,” Alan Root said when I was in a helicopter beside him. We lifted off, and he tilted the helicopter toward the Ngong Hills, blue and shadowy in the distance, and flew at high speed over the game-filled plains. I could make out the zebras, Cape buffalo, and gazelle in the national park below as Alan pulled back on the throttle and we shot like a bullet through the clear African sky. (Guillaume Bonn)

Frequently prowling beneath the Roots’ dinner table was Joan's caracal, a large wildcat with razor-sharp teeth and claws. If guests leaned down to pet it, nine times out of ten it would roll over and let them. But the tenth time it might very well scream and lunge like a living bale of barbed wire. (Mary Ellen Mark)
